EPISODE TRANSCRIPT
I’m excited to be kicking off the Play Nature podcast with you. Together, we’ll be going on a journey of ideas, looking at the beauty and benefits of outdoor play for children, and ourselves, and how we can support more play. More than just fun and games, play is the natural way that children learn, grow, and develop.
Discovering themselves and the world around them, and I am all for connecting children to nature, with natural materials, loose parts, mess, and even risky play. Real experiences, in the real world, with real materials, and real friends. The good stuff. I’ve been working for over 30 years with parents, teachers, and communities designing natural playscapes for children of all ages and abilities.
I love it! I’ve written three books about natural playscapes and risky play, and have traveled the world designing, speaking, and visiting amazing outdoor play environments of all kinds. I am on a non stop life journey quest to continue learning about play, advocating for play, and supporting folks like you in your mission to make the world a better place as you support play in the lives of children.
I’d love for you to join me in this journey as we explore topics such as the world of natural playscapes filled with willow huts, mud kitchens, sunflower houses, kale forests, and chickens. The magic of adding loose parts outside to spark children’s creativity and problem solving skills and the benefits of saying yes to risky play and how to do it.
I’ve got amazing friends around the planet in the field of play that I’m excited to interview and introduce you to. Together we’ll explore Scottish Forest Schools, Australian Adventure Playgrounds, Permaculture Preschools in New Zealand, an autism nature trail in the U. S. that I helped design, and much, much more.
We’ll even get philosophical and dive deep into the very nature of play itself and how vital it is to the lives of all children, especially in our modern technological era. And we’ll bring it all back home to what you can do in your own backyard and community. To support outdoor play, protect childhood, and let kids be kids in nature, in all seasons, in all weather, with all the good stuff that nature provides.
I’m excited for you to join me.
